Recording String Quartets in Shanghai
A wonderful recording session with the Polaris Quartet in Shanghai in April 2017 for a new CD of contemporary string quartets. My new piece The Void Between Heartbeats will be on the new Atoll Records CD due for release later this year. The CD is based on the idea of “Flow” and is titled Flow-Liu-Pravaha, taking the English, Chinese and Hindu words for Flow. Other composers featured on the CD are three time Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty, leading Chinese composer Jia Daquan, UK based Indian composer Parum Vir and my friend and colleague Martin Lodge.
My piece The Void Between Heartbeats, intensely sparse, aiming to capture the silence and nothingness between beats of the heart. The moment when an arrow should be released, a place of the abyss. I have used digital FX throughout the piece which have been applied post recording.
